Handwoven Hemp Batik Placemat Panels

$24.00

Lovely placemat / panels of batik decorated, indigo dyed, handwoven hemp - traditionally handmade by Hmong villagers in Vietnam.

Measuring approx 29-32cm square, each piece is unique with varying sizes, designs and intensity of indigo. Rustic, raw and textural, enhancing any space.

Sold individually, you will receive a random selection from those pictured. Please contact me if you have a specific request, which I will accommodate if stocks allow.

Hemp is grown by the Hmong tribeswomen, dried, then the fibre stripped from the stem and pounded, boiled, spun and coated with wax before being strung on an old wooden loom and woven into the finished fabric. All year round the tribeswomen can be seen with hemp fibres wound around their hands, using what spare time they have to connect the separate fibres to make one use-able thread.

The indigo dye is obtained from a plant also grown by the tribe on the edge of their steep rice terraced mountainsides.

These unique textiles are sourced from a number of elderly Hmong women in a small village in Northern Vietnam by Rambutan Vietnam. Based in Hanoi, Rambutan Vietnam seek to bring rare, vintage, unique artisan crafts from the tribespeople of Vietnam to the rest of the world, hoping to keep alive some of the traditions and crafts of these enduring people.

Hand produced, using traditional methods, and sourced directed from the Hmong villagers to ensure a fair trade price goes directly to the makers and back to their impoverished communities.

Care: Occasional, gentle handwash only.
