Cohana Masu Pincushion Kokura Textile Set
$105.00
Exquisite sewing tools from Cohana Japan - this set includes a Masu pincushion with Kokura textile and Shippo glass sewing pins, a Meboso needle set and a flower-shaped wooden thread spool.
With sophisticated dovetail joinery that does not require nails or glue, the traditional Masu box is handcrafted from fragrant Hinoki Cypress, encasing a pincushion made of Kokura textile.
A cotton fabric produced in the Northern Kyushu region since the early Edo period, Kokura textile is known for its three-dimensional stripes with a rhythmic colour pattern created by the use of many warp threads. Production ceased during WWII, only to be revived decades later by weaver Noriko Tsuiki, with her thriving textile brand "Kokura Shima Shima" creating stylish-but-traditional cloth, acclaimed for its simple and versatile textile designs that fit into modern lifestyles.
The pincushion holds three glass head pins, capturing the beauty of traditional Aichi Shippo ware. Shippo is a type of cloisonne enamelware, or lacquered metalwork, its name derived from the 'seven treasures' of gold, silver, pearl, agate, crystal, coral, and lapis lazuli. These sturdy pins bring an elevated touch to your craft.
Meboso needles have been loved by seamstresses in Kanazawa for over 440 years. Superior quality, they have a sturdy weight and pierce cloth effortlessly. With a precise, sharp point achieved through rigorous vertical polishing, these needles make for a delightful sewing experience.
Set of 8 light to medium weight needles in 4 different lengths for light to medium-weight cloth, such as cotton, silk, crepe and other delicate fabrics. In keeping with tradition of caring for possessions, these needles are presented in a unique paper container adorned with a silk tassel.
Completing the set, hand-carved wooden spool of thread. High-quality thread made by Fujix of Kyoto is a delight to use in any sewing project. Thread is wound around a flower-shaped spool made of tochinoki, Japanese horse chestnut. Artisans carve the spools by hand in their workshop in snowy Nagano Prefecture. The wooden thread spool can also be strung as a pendant or made into an accessory with the small cutout by the top.
Pincushion, glass head pins, needle set and wooden thread spool come wrapped furoshiki style in a quality piece of Kakura cloth, measuring 43 x 43cm.
Made in Japan by Cohana.
