Chunky Peduncle Silk Yarn

$25.00

Earthy and textural, dark chunky Peduncle Silk yarn, a lovely organic material for knitting, crochet, weaving and textile projects.

100 gram hank / approx 150 yards / 100% pure Nassi Katia Silk

Unique to India, peduncle silk (also known as nassi katia silk) is sourced from the stems that connect cocoons to trees. When the tropical tussah caterpillar is ready to spin its cocoon, the first silk is black, spun back and forth to form a stem, called a peduncle. The caterpillar spends an entire day creating the peduncle before it begins to spin the cocoon.

As nothing is left to waste in India, the village women in the tussah-rearing areas have developed a multi-step process of turning the silk peduncles into silk yarn.

Small scale handcrafts from JP Handloom, working for the betterment of spinning and weaving women in small villages in India. Maintaining fair trade work conditions and living wages allowing craftswomen to access health care and education for their children.
