Kakishibu Dyed Linen Patches

Kakishibu Dyed Linen Patches

$48.00

Beautiful, textural Kakishibu-dyed patches of linen and cotton, small-batch, hand-made artisanal fabrics, inspiration for your next bespoke textile craft project.

The rich cultural heritage of Japan's Kakishibu dates back to the 13th Century, traditionally used to dye textiles, stencil paper, seal parasols & finish woodwork.

Natural tannins are extracted from the unripe fruit of the Kaki (persimmon) tree, specifically the astringent variety, Shibu - harvested, peeled, crushed & fermented in water for several months to years.

The non-toxic, rich amber dye imbues textiles with properties of durability, water resistance, insect repellent, antiseptic & mildew proof. Reacting to sunshine, the dyed fabric darkens with UV exposure.

Locally, in a slow meditative process, short lengths of pure linen and cotton fabric are prepared then repeatedly soaked in kakishibu dye before laying in the summer sun, deepening the colours to a range of autumnal hues, some pieces further treated with post-mordants to extend the colour collection.

You will receive 6 panels in graduating colours, a mix of pure cottons & linens, each panel measures approx 16-18cm x 18-20cm.

Kakishibu dyed textiles will evolve over time, as all things in nature do.

Fabrics come to you un-ironed with frayed edges, irregularities in colour and texture are part of their handmade charm. By nature, kakishibu dyed textiles have a stiffness, washing and general wear will soften this over time.

Care: Gentle handwash in warm water.

We do our best to depict products accurately, please allow for colour variations between monitors and screens.
